The roads of Hel are known to me

Over the Bridge and through forest and field

I walk with the knowledge of ancient paths

Tread by my blood-soaked feet

The ways between are trod in silence

Vitality in each step, and life springing forth

I walk and life returns in my steps from Death

Antler swaying on a cord at my side

Helheim’s lands roll up to the frozen ground

Ice stretches beyond the horizons and snow blankets all

I walk and little mosses grace my passing

Steam cleansing my warming corpse

Fire graces my bare chest and plants warm kisses

Nerves and sinew stretch and reach and sigh

I walk and ashes cling to my steps

My fingers grace dark wood that breathes new life

The noiseless yawn moves the air

Potential and nothing settle peace in my heart and mind

I walk between a roiling river and the liminal breath

My path winding about the current’s course

The deep dark earth welcomes my journey

Singing picks and voices accompany my torchlit steps

I walk by and see the forges and yards of mighty crafters

Passing, my gaze full of witness to glory and might

Forests line the mouth’s exit

Silvery voices welcome me home and bid me stay

I walk in silence, refusal spoken in my stride

My hof’s door left open for my return

Trackless woods and deep valleys invite me

Animals saunter and monsters track my way

I walk without fear among the Jötnar home

For my gifts bring peace and life to Them as well

Fields of wheat wave in greeting to me

Orchards and lakes and sagging bushes thank my passing

I walk in fertile places that I have renewed

My birthplace heralds my passage and bids me return

The peaks of homes kiss the clouds and the walls open their arms

Work and war clash around my ears, familiar calls ring out

I walk unbound in the halls and gaze upon the seeing seat

Memories follow me on the rainbow road

The expanse of Jörð invites me, finally

The blood-stained sickle gripped in my wet-eyed wife’s hand

I walk and lie in the mound She has made and breathe

Reborn and victorious I rise again

Wunjo

Today I did galdr with Wunjo.

As before, I smoked Großmutter Una to cleanse and prepare myself.  As before, I did the prayers to prepare and flowed into a good, clean whole self when I did.  However, today was spent entirely in the garage doing the work.

Breathing during the first round of galdr was different.  There’s a different scent to the air inside the garage versus outside of it.  Not bad, but inside there’s definitely more of a homely feel to the air and less of a wilder scent.  All the various pieces of metal on the shelves, the tractor and the rototiller give off their own little scents too, so the whole feel of the garage is more home, more human.

The first round of galdr brought with it different images.  The first round my voice was very bass, and the garage seemed to echo out like I was on a plain.  The first galdr of the first round brought with it an image of the Rune in white against a black background.  The image then began to flutter, taking on shape, like a flag or pennant.  Like the mast of a ship.  The second galdr of the first round saw that flag in someone’s hand across a battlefield, yells.  A cacophony of noise.  The third galdr of the first round saw it run up over a fort on a long stick, then a flag run over a castle, and raised over a battlefield.

The second round of galdr my voice was far lighter than the first.  As I galdred the first thing I experienced was a family in their home, a warm fire lit, and sitting around a table talking, drinking, enjoying themselves.  There was laughter, I remember that very clearly.  The next galdr and the family was sitting around the fire and sharing something, I think dessert of some kind, and there was a person talking.  There were guests, and they were smiling, listening to the speaker.  The third galdr, and it was quite high and I had the sensation of the Gods being there, the images shifting to a person before an altar with their family, and thanks being given.  I had the sensation of the Gods being happy, that happiness radiating all around.  It was like…wrapped in warmth and joy.

The third round of galdr my voice came rough, croaking.  In the first galdr, Wunjo swung before me, an axe or a mace in the field of white on black.  It was wielded by a hand covered in blood.  The next galdr Wunjo was a hammer and it was nailing in a nail to the wall, repairing it.  The last galdr was a chant, alternating between long and short galdr of Wunjo.  I felt happiness, I felt surety of purpose.  That idea of measure twice and cut once, of the family being united and good, of the Gods being pleased.  That striving, and the fierce joy of having done well by it.

As before, I made prayers of thanks to Rúnatýr and the Runevaettir.  As before, I cleansed and then cleaned my pipe to come back to normal headspace.

Hail to the Warrior Dead This Labor Day

Hail to the Warrior Dead who bled and died so that children no longer had to work in factories and mines, so that safety for all those They left behind became a priority, so that the death-march drudge of factory and industry conditions stopped churning out as steady a line of corpses as products.  Hail to the Warrior Dead of Blair Mountain Ridge, of the Haymarket Riots, of the Black Patch Wars, of the Flint Sit-Down Strike known to the workers as “The Battle of the Bulls Run”, and so many other times where You All marched in solidarity, power, strength, and ferocity.

Hail to You All!  Thank You for your blood and body!  Thank You for your loved ones’ missed time with You!  Thank You for Your heart that inspired countless millions, whose stance, work, and sacrifice we still benefit from!  Thank you for Your sacrifices!  Hail to You!

Hail to Mary Harris Jones, known to millions as Mother Jones, tireless in her fight!  Hail to You Black-Dressed, Storyteller, Inspirer, Keeper of Protest’s Flame!  Hail to You, Whose tongue cut Oily John and Crystal Peter!

Hail to all Those Who marched, bled, and died!  Hail to Those Who sat down and were unmoved!  Hail to Those Who were struck and maimed!  Hail to Those Who were mocked and ridiculed!  Hail to Those Who were reviled, and dismissed!  Hail to Those Who were crushed in the gears!  Hail to Those Who were mauled by the dogs!  Hail to Those Who were killed by police!  Hail to Those Who were killed by the National Guard!  Hail to Those Who were killed by the companies’ employees!  Hail to Those Who were killed by the hired thugs and gunmen of the companies They worked for!  Hail to all These, Who still were unbent in Their righteous anger, and unabated until They achieved victory!

Hail to the Unknown Warriors, the hundreds and thousands who gave their life so their fellow people could have a better life!

May all of Them be with us again.  The struggles of Your  times have returned, and we need You All.

I shall do, and call upon anyone who reads these words to do, as Mother Jones called: “Pray for the Dead and fight like hell for the living.”  Hail to You All!  Remember the Dead, for They are still with us!
