For the Disir

April 9, 2017 Leave a comment

The skin and flesh fell away
The little ones took their fill
The soil ate well

The seed burrowed in the heart sprouted
The tree took root
The soul grew up and wide

The branches spread
The leaves budded
The animals gathered to live with it

The family visited their Disir
The bread and the milk laid down
The offerings fed the tree and Her companions

The tree shed its seeds
The animals carried some, the wind others
The Disir’s children grew tall and strong

Opening Prayer for Episode 43 of The Jaguar and the Owl

I wrote this prayer for the opening of Episode 43 for The Jaguar and the Owl.  For PSVL’s recap of the episode, look here.
The Jaguar and the Owl can be found here.
Episode 43 can be found here.

Kvasir’s blood builds | within the poet’s mouth
Bursts forth with praise | to sky, soil, and sea
Gushes forth with foam | a font of Mimir’s well
Poured out upon the Tree

Surt’s Gift builds warm | within the stone heart
Blesses lodge with smoke | to sky, soil, and sea
Carries the recels | as Muspel’s hearth
Pours smoke out upon the Tree

The wolf-priest comes | a wineskin in hand
Whose words travel far | over sky, soil, and sea
Let all heed their cup | Kvasir’s blood travels long
To be poured upon the Tree

Grandfathers! Grandmothers!

Once we planted trees

To mark your passing

Hoping you would return

We called to you,

Grandfathers!

Grandmothers!

Asking you to come home

Once we raised mounds

Laid you deep inside

And visited bringing gifts

We called to you,

Grandfathers!

Grandmothers!

Asking you to hear our praise and songs

It has been so long

Since a tree was planted

Or a name was given

A mound was raised

Or a gift laid down

Again, we prepare the ground for trees

Again, we give the names

Again, we prepare the Earth for mounds

Again, we lay down the gifts

We seek you once again

We call to you, we sing to you, we praise you

Grandfathers!

Grandmothers!

Asking you to come home

Asking you to show us the way before

Asking you to walk with us once more

Keep frith hale | in trust and honor

And hold fast to friends;

No tree grows | without water or sun

So too no love or tribe

Keep frith hale | with those well-loved

And speak without fear;

The poison-tongued | shows his fangs

Well before the strike

Keep frith hale | be wary with words

And cautious in action;

The good friend | gives ear for woe

And hands in calamity

Seek under the Tree | hanging with taut rope

Yggr hangs, bleeding wisdom;

Seek in the Hall | seated in power

Alfaðir waits, far-seeing and grim

Seek on the Road | blue cloak wrapped tight

Gangleri wanders far, welcoming company;

Seek in the Wild | spear keen and gleaming

Wod preparing for battle

Seek on the Mountain | mouth open wide

Galdraföðer sings spell and enchantment;

Seek in the World | form ever-changing

Svipal walks and stalks

Wisdom long sought | between Well and Tree,

In all the Nine Worlds;

Bought with pain | earned by patience,

Is wisdom well paid

The Old Ones

Old ones laying in the lichyard

Under mound and tree and stone

I hear Your sacred Voices

I hear the call in Home

The bones sunk deep in earth

The ashes scattered wide

I seek Your sacred places

Where Your spirits still abide

Disir and Vater, ancient Trees

Whose roots reach so far down

I am here and listening

Where You all are found
